Varieties, and many time see birds we have never seen before. Storks, toucans, hawks, eagles, and vultures dot the land, along with a variety of other birds like parakeets and pheasants. It is a wonderland for bird watchers.

Panama Junta Arroz

Another junta on the books. Yigo and Reina hosted a junta arroz 3 days ago and we had 32 men and 10 women. Here my son in law Klaus tries the cuchilla for the first time.

image

And this handful came from my neighbor Marcelino.

image

And this is Yigo’s son Pacifico with a cuchilla and water and seco for the workers. What a great tradition of neighbors helping neighbors. Agua Buena had 30 juntas this past month. Seems like everyone is in on someone’s junta. Great times

Panama Vacunadera

An incredible few days in Agua Buena, Panama. Juntas de arroz, cattle branding and vaccines yesterday at Mitin Dominguez’ vacunadera to brand and vaccinate the younger cows. A grand tradition here with the cowboys rodeoing mostly from the ground and some from horseback. Very good ropers and wranglers. Tough as nail cowboys with no fear. Here below my neighbor Chichin takes down a cow from the tail.

image

And here Chiqui drags one out of the coral so the guys on the ground can catch him.

image

All in all a great day again in Agua Buena. Great food and friendship, and of course, seco.

Isla Cañas

A trip to Isla Cañas is always a great day. 14k beautiful beach and shells and fun. Isla Cañas is also a nature preserve and grand sea tortoise hatching ground. Today we are just here for fun and sun. This is the boat ride to the island below with our family.

Rio Salto y Piscina

Rio Agua Buena has some beautiful falls and swimming pools. During the summer this is a favorite for locals and the occasional tourist off the beaten path. Great to have your own natural water feature with diving pools and slides.

image

Here my daughter Heather and I are getting a welcome cool down. Nothing beats a day at the river. Miss you J and  L !!  Ha!

image

And here with Asa and Eva. The river also has a lot of huge fresh water shrimp not pictured here.

Cutarras

image

Each region of panama has a little different style of sandal that is made locally by one or more of the residents. Each pair is custom cut and fit and a very snugly adjusted for a perfect fit.

image

Here my neighbor Manuel is making cutarras for my family. The Cutarras is the style from the Agua Buena, Tonosi, Los Santos area. All of the work was done with a bowie knife and a leather punch and hammer.

Very cool!

Panama Montañas

When I first saw the mountains of Panama I just said wow! They are super steep and still holding vegetation. Spectacular and full of variety, the high mountain valleys and thick jungle vegetation make a stark contrast to other mountain ranges. I asked a couple from Switzerland what they thought of the mountains, and their reply was “they’re just hills”. I guess if your used to the alps these are small, but the steepness and beauty is worth a look.  And from about any mountain top in panama you can see an ocean. Pretty cool.

image

This is the view from my backyard. Not the steepest mountain around but a good example of the vegetation throughout my panama montañas.
